First, here here is a completely unbalanced, obnoxious bit of snarky anti-Bush sentiment disguised as "news":
US President George W. Bush seized on a foiled London airline bomb plot to hammer unnamed critics he accused of having all but forgotten the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Weighed down by the unpopular war in Iraq, Bush and his aides have tried to shift the national political debate from that conflict to the broader and more popular global war on terrorism ahead of November 7 congressional elections.
The London conspiracy is "a stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation," the president said on a day trip to Wisconsin.
This report is being discussed on the lefty blogs with the usual paranoia and smug self-righteousness of those in complete denial about 9/11 and the current war on terror.
More than anything--more than taking the Islamic fanatics seriously even when captured in the act of planning major attacks--they are afraid that any success anywhere in the war on terror reflects well on Bush (otherwise known as the "real" enemy of civilization). AND THEY CANNOT ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN, CAN THEY?
Meanwhile, consistent with their convoluted and tortured manner of "thinking" (feeling, actually) the following words spoken by an important Democratic Party leader were most certainly NOT uttered for anything as hypocritical as "political gain", and simply reflect the Democrat's amazing willingness speaking truth to power--even if it hurts their cause:
"This latest plot demonstrates the need for the Bush administration and the Congress to change course in Iraq and ensure that we are taking all the steps necessary to protect Americans at home and across the world.”
DR. SANITY'S ROUGH TRANSLATION OF MR. REID'S OBVIOUSLY NON-POLITICAL STATEMENT: "Let us by all means necessary protect American at home and across the world, but NOT by aggressively interrogating terrorists captured while attacking the US; NOT by listening in on the conversations of terrorists plotting against the US; NOT by using all the intelligence at our disposal; NOT by fostering democracy; NOT by supporting Israel; NOT by trying to decrease dependence on foreign oil and encouraging exploration and drilling in the US; NOT by going it alone but by forging an international consensus; NOT by forging an international consensus, but by going it alone; NOT by anybody dying--especially American soldiers; NOT by actually doing anything at all, but only by talking about doing something."
