To chair the 2009 governing board of the U.N.'s flagship agency, the multibillion-dollar globe-girdling United Nations Development Program, dedicated to promoting good governance and ending poverty, the U.N. has now picked--wait for it--the Islamic Republic of Iran.
This decision--reached last Friday--has escaped public notice, perhaps because the UNDP has neglected to advertise the news, or maybe because the world is too busy watching in Gaza the latest product of Iran's terrorist development programs in the Middle East.
But handing Iran the gavel of the UNDP executive board ranks right up there with the U.N.'s choice in 2003 of Libya to head the old Human Rights Commission, or Zimbabwe in 2007 to chair the Commission on Sustainable Development.
Except in some ways it's worse.
Yes, it is much worse. Because this is how the UN validates and enables dysfunctional, sociopathic and murderous nations so that they are able to brag about how civilized, peaceful, and supportive of human rights they are, when in truth they are anything but. This is how the UN gives terrorist nations like Iran a respected voice in the international community.
Stupidity comes in all shapes and sizes, a veritable spectrum that extends from willful blindness on the part of world leaders to the passive, uncritical and morally bankrupt minions who nod sagely at any idiocy perpetrated by the United Nations--the sacred repository of all the useless leftist utopian fantasies--even as they desperately try to maintain a world view that proudly ignores reality.
Both ends of this spectrum of stupidity are incapable of responding in any appropriate manner to the deeply despicable and nauseatingly hypocritical behavior of the international organization whose stated aims are to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achieving world peace.
What a joke.
Only in a world that values nothing would there not be instantaneous outrage at this appointment. The UN has already given the lunatic President of Iran a podium on the world stage to spew forth his lies, and be feted and honored for them. Now it proposes to honor the country that aggressively denies the holocaust and intends to "wipe Israel off the map" with the chair of a committee devoted to good governance and ending poverty. They might as well have given the honor to North Korea or Somalia or Darfur (perhaps they have something even more special and equally appropriate lined up for them).
How can the UN allow itself to bask in the treasured hope that reality does not exist, and that there are no consequences for appeasing evil?
How has it come to pass that the stupid and the willfully blind are once again so unwilling to confront the true malignancy that threatens world peace; even as they forcefully denounce anyone who exposes their delusions?
Iran and its leaders have no political nuance in their all-consuming hatred; nor do they have one whit of human decency or tolerance or brotherhood or virtue or peace.
The goals pursued by Iran count on the entire spectrum of human stupidity represented by the UN, whose members are willing and eager to embrace pseudoreality and suspend judgement and critical thinking if means they can temporarily feel good about themselves.
