HAIL MARY ***Updated***

***Scroll down for updates on the game***

It's the fourth quarter with scant seconds to play; the team is behind and many want to throw in the towel. But, it is third down and yards to go for a first, and there is time for one last play. The ball is hiked; the President fades back, looking for an opening as the opposing team desperately tries to take him down before he can pass; but somehow he resolutely dodges them and manages to let loose a long, wide and nearly perfect bullet to the determined receivers far downfield.

It's a "Hail Mary" pass , but it provides the team with its only real chance at victory. Now, the ball is in the air and both sides are desperately pursuing it to either catch it and take it all the way, or to intercept it--depending on their ideological inclination toward the game.

The outcome of the game is up in the air, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Surprisingly to some, the President wants his team to win.

Which is much more than the opposition desires, as seen by their scramble to put in place a radically different field strategy:

There's a chance to finally win this game...it won't be easy...it requires determination and grit and a desire to win. But there are many who are determined to stop the team in its tracks and give it all away, no matter the consequences.

I'm with the President on this--I'm for a home team win. I can deal with losing if it turns out that way, but I don't want the team--the best damn team in the world--to give up even if the stands are emptying. I want them to catch that Hail Mary, take it to the end zone, and win this sucker.

UPDATE: Siggy has some thoughts:
Germany and Japan were devastated by war, but that war was a byproduct of the devastation wrought upon those countries by years of tyranny. When the Second World War ended, those nations chose to arise from the ashes and rebuild themselves into free and democratic societies that have become ‘a lamp unto the nations’ of the world.
If the Iraqis fail to learn from the devastation brought upon them by the tyranny of Saddam and the war that rid them of the hated tyrant, they will have made a very different choice than the Germans or Japanese.

America and the west cannot be held responsible for the moral toxicity that embraces tyranny over freedom.

It is Iraqis that will have to clean their own house. It is Iraqis that must turn in foreign fighters and it is Iraqis that must choose between freedom that will bring progress and a future to the next generation of Iraqis or the tyranny that will insure generations of failure and misery.

And Larry Kudlow at The Corner notes that the markets have given the Presiden a vote of confidence:
Amidst the expected chorus of pundit pessimism about the President’s new Iraq initiative, world financial markets are voting for Bush—not against him.

Yesterday, before the speech, stocks went up, while oil and gold both went down.

Today, when trading opened after the speech, stocks went up and oil and gold went down.

All three are political and war risk barometers. It’s a very important vote of confidence for Mr. Bush.

UPDATE II: This is excellent news that the President means business and that Iran and Syria better get out of the way:
Reports out of Iraq claim that US troops raided an Iranian Consulate, confiscated documents and arrested several people. While the news is dwelling on the rhetoric of Maliki telling the Mahdi Army to disarm and Bush's speech, in which he mentioned Iran and Syria, it at least appears the administration is intent on making this initiative one of action and not just talk. As many as six Iranians are said to be detained. Iran has summoned the Iraqi and Swiss ambassadors. They're displeased.

I'll just bet they are. Perhaps they should consider it a down payment on 1979.

A WHITER SHADE OF 'FAIL'

(With apologies to Procol Harum and none whatsoever to Senator Edward Kennedy whose recent partisan drivel demonstrates that he remains mentally stuck in the late 1960's, the time of his greatest quagmire)

He skipped the light fandango
And forgot to call the cops
He was feeling kind of seasick
So he pulled out all the stops
Now he's an aging senator
Who still comes out to play
When he calls out for another drink
The waiter brings a tray

And so it was that later
In the senate--not in jail;
That his face already jowly,
Turned a whiter shade of "fail"

He says there is no reason
For George Bush to win Iraq,
Cause it could badly hurt his party
And the Dems would get the sack...
Ted's a priest of holy failure
And he worships at its spring;
And although his eyes are open
He just never sees a thing.

And so it was that later
In the senate, not in jail;
That his face already jowly,
Turned a whiter shade of "fail"

VIVA LA REVOLUCION DE LOS IDIOTAS UTILES

Victor Davis Hanson considers the deterioration of the university in his latest column at Pajamas.
What are we to make of this increasingly corrupt institution, whose health is so necessary to the welfare and competitiveness of the United States? It brags that American higher education is the strongest on the globe, but that is largely true only because of the non-political and still untainted hard sciences, engineering, and informational and computer sciences—and despite the humanities, particularly literature, philosophy, and history that have become increasingly ideological and theoretical.

I was thinking of all this the other day, remembering the Larry Summers fiasco, eighty-eight of the Duke faculty weighing in through a public letter against their own students unjustly accused, the Ward Churchill mess, and the assorted outbursts of professors since 9/11.

We should at least insist on a little accountability from this increasingly medieval institution. After teaching some twenty years in the university and writing about its endemic problems, I keep asking myself the same questions.

Why? Why? Why?

Hanson presents many examples of the decline, and asks the following two questions, which I consider essential to understanding the problem:
Why do professors insist after six years on life-long tenure—when everyone from garbage collectors to lawyers and doctors do not enjoy such insulation from both the market and accountability about job performance? If it is for the promise of “academic freedom” and “intellectual diversity” then the resulting institutionalized uniformity and mediocrity were not worth the cost. Compare the lopsided Academic Senate votes about issues extraneous to the operation of the university from gay marriage to the war in Iraq. There are usually reminiscent of plebiscites in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq or Castro’s Cuba with majorities of 90-100%.

Why when academia is so critical of other American institutions, from the Republican party and corporations to churches and the military, does it ignore its own colossal failures? The level of knowledge of the today’s graduate is the stuff of jokes, exactly what one would expect once a common shared instruction in science, history, literature, languages, and mathematics largely disappeared, replaced by a General Education potpourri of specialized classes in gender, race, class, and politics masquerading as knowledge-based?

Like Hanson, I am a long-term member of the professoriate. I have watched over the last 25 plus years as academic institutions in this country have transformed themselves into centers of intellectual uniformity, even as they ubiquitously tout "diversity" and rigorously enforce political correctness; and as they have embraced mediocrity on all levels, even as they arrogantly boast of their intellectually superior status.

While radical professors, disguised as "academics", ponder questions like, "Who are we to judge Saddam Hussein?"; and as political activism--rather than the pursuit of knowledge--becames their primary activity on campus, they should not be surprised as they and their departments become more and more irrelevant and ignored by the people whose taxes and hard work support their very existence. Indeed, they should wonder and rejoice at the largesse that is directed in their direction without demands for improved performance and productivity.

Even most policymakers have had to look elsewhere for a source of ideas and intelligent discussion. In today's world, the academic's role is increasingly taken over by think tanks, which...well, think--as opposed to just emoting and spewing slogans about "social justice."

The transformation of our intellectual centers of knowledge into vast emotional swamps of multicultural victimhood, offended by any idea that they don't like, can be best appreciated by the unwillingness to tolerate dissent and difference of opinion, and the utter willingness to resort to physical violence to silence anyone they don't agree with.

In this manner, the professors--sure of their ideological and moral superiorty-- are no longer bothered by pesky ideas, which might actually have to be defended by reason and logic. No, they rely almost totally these days on the primacy of their feelings, which they proudly point out need no defense, since they are honest feelings and reflect the utmost emotional sensitivity (except, of course, to those who happen to disagree).

David Horowitz once wrote about his unpleasant experience at the University of Hawaii, where he was invited to speak and was received by the very faculty who invited him to speak, with hostility and boorishness. He commented:
When we go to our doctors' offices we don't expect to see signs on their office doors making political statements attacking the war in Iraq or attacking those who oppose it. That's because doctors are professionals and have taken an oath to minister to all their patients regardless of their political beliefs. Why can't we expect the same professionalism and decency from our professors?

The problem is that the public does not demand professionalism from them. If they did demand it, then university budgets would magically shrink from losing all the excess and useless baggage they are forced to carry for life in a variety of disciplines.

But without such accountability, how can we justify entrusting the vulnerable minds of our young people to the rabid emotions of professors who prefer to indoctrinate, rather than teach those minds? Sometimes, whether you are young or old, it is hard to tell the difference between the two, but permitting a student the freedom and respect necessary to make up his or her own mind when presented with the facts, is a clue that being taught to think is the actual goal of a teacher's efforts; as opposed to being forced to regurgitate a particular professor's thoughts.

When you consider today's academic environment with its "cradle to grave" tenure, that ignores performance and takes from each according to his ability and give to each irrespective of competence, you begin to understand why this elite professorial proletariat is able to easily identify with the likes of Saddam, Fidel or Hugo. Is it any wonder that these poor oppressed workers of the academic world believe themselves to be just more helpless victims of American capitalism and imperialism, particularly when they are asked to be professional or accountable for their behavior. Such demands are usually met with cries that their "academic freedoms" are being violated by "fascists" determined to oppress their brilliant minds.

The truth is that many of those minds have not expressed or considered a new idea since the early 1960's, and are only capable of recycling old slogans and regurgitating the same discredited ideas and utopian fantasies of that time. Those slogans and fantasies meant very little then, and less now; but are symbolic of a time in history when the pull of that ideology they was powerful.

Since the Cold War, the utopian tyrannies they worshipped now dress up their underlying socialist/communist agenda in lovely, new postmodern clothes (see here, here and here, for example). But the new look is only the same old anti-U.S., anti-Israel; anti-Freedom; anti-Democracy; anti-Capitalism--only in brighter, more cheerful colors.

The emperor, however, is just as naked as he ever was.

And running through all that colorful postmodern socialist tripe, like a river of psychological dysfunction, is a vast, pervasive denial of the fundamentally anti-human agenda which brought about the suffering and death of millions of people; and which were a direct consequence of the glorious socialist utopias of the 20th century.

The new intellectuals of academia take no responsibility for this, nor do they care about consequences at all. For them, it is all about maintaining a pseudo self-esteem based on a belief that they are the chosen intellectual and moral superiors, destined to lead the way to the next variant of the socialist nightmare. For this, they are perfectly willing to suspend their rational faculty so as to march more mindless in intellectual lock-step. In doing so they are a tyrant's dream! Their slogans and banners are the stuff of dictator's fantasies. For these professors and their minions, the mindset of Orwell's 1984 is a deliberate lifestyle choice.

These are our new intellectuals. Is it any wonder that a fraud like Ward Churchill is their poster boy? And that tyrants like Saddam, Fidel and Hugo ("Give me socialism or give me death" Chavez are their causes celebres?

These 'comrade' professors are still the same useful idiots they always were.

Viva la revolucion! Viven estos idiotas útiles!

THE SANITY SQUAD GOES WIDE

The Sanity Squad goes "wide"... discussing a variety of important topics in their latest podcast at Pajamas.

The question is, can you keep up?

The discussion ranges from Iran to postmodernism-- and we just can't resist analyzing the Democrats and the political left, both of whom are so psychologically invested in America's defeat in Iraq, that they loudly voice their opposition to the President's plan for victory even before he even unveils it! You can just imagine what they will say after tonight's speech on Iraq by Bush.

Iit seems like déjà vu all over again, as the Democrats--who never got around to crossing that "bridge to the 21st century" Clinton and Gore used to talk about-- prepare themselves to try and repeat the late-1974 withdrawal of funding from Vietnam. The Squad will tell you what's behind the Dem's march to surrender in Iraq; why the President should go “wide” ; as well as the psychological implications of the left's inability to morally distinguish between actions taken in self-defense and actions that arise from unadulterated aggression and hatred.

From postmodernern rhetoric and moral relativism, to the tyranny of utopianism--the Squad covers it all. Don't miss it! There's plenty of controversy and passion, as well as the best psychological and behavioral analysis you will ever get on today's politics!

Join Siggy , Neo-neocon , Shrinkwrapped, and myself as we opine, analyze, and free associate in the latest podcast!

Previous podcasts of The Sanity Squad can be found here; and you can also download them from iTunes.
(The Sanity Squad cartoon at the right is drawn by Eric Allie, whose collection of political cartoons can be found here and here).

And yes, we really do look like the people in the picture.

HOW SAD FOR AL QAEDA AND THE LEFT

Just in case anyone has failed to notice in the last couple of years, this is a global war against Islamic fascism we are involved in. Some have even referred to it as World War IV.

As you might expect, the clueless left who appear to be incapable of figuring out why the U.S. might be interested in Al Qaeda thugs and murderers taking over control of Somalia are now screaming about "injustice".

But no matter how much the left would like to protect all the enemies of civilization no matter where they set up operations (there just wasn't time for them to send human shields, I guess), things look very bad for Al Qaeda in Somalia.

As for fighting injustice, once in a while it would be so refreshing if these ridiculous moonbats directed their rage at some appropriate targets .

But then, I suppose that would go against their holy, sacred vows denouncing reason, judgement, and common sense. How sad for them; but at least they do have their principles and priorities.

TOUCH AND GO

It's snowing in Ann Arbor and Dr. Sanity has decided to get above the clouds and head over to the blogs of her favorite mental health professionals. If the weather is good in their location, I'll do a few touch and go's to give you a taste of their wisdom and wit.

The first stop is at SC&A where Siggy writes about "Religious Progressives, The Judenrat And Another Generation In Denial:

"To be a radical ‘religious progressive’ that adopts the radical leftist agenda, faith has to be dispensed with. A believer who wants to espouse progressive ideology must accept that his religious beliefs and values are worth less than progressive beliefs and values. Believers must find a way to rewrite faith to accommodate progressive ideology, even if that means upending the very beliefs, values and principles of the faith they profess to be a part of."

In the end, all radical ‘religious progressives’ are the Judenrat and kapos of their respective faiths and of our time. By accepting and ascribing to beliefs and ideologies of Leftism, ‘religious progressives’ have made a deal with the very devil that would destroy them. Disagree with a ‘religious progressive,’ and like their progressive masters, tolerance goes out the window because dissent cannot be tolerated -- because the ‘emperor has no clothes.’"

Neo-neocon is apparently on a similar flight path as Siggy, as her topic is very related:

They're a fringe, it's true--but a fringe that detractors of Israel have made much of.

I'm speaking of the ultra-orthodox religious Jews who are anti-Zionist. That's their prerogative, of course; eveyone's entitled to his/her opinion, yada yada yada.

But some of them go further then that; in fact, it turns out that six of the delegates to the mid-December 2006 Iranian Holocaust denial conference were such Jews. Collaborating with an Iran bent on the destruction of Israel and Jews is quite a stretch.

Over at One Cosmos, Gagdad Bob has some profound insights on the topic of "Truth and How To Avoid It":

If truth exists, it seems that it is something that we would want to align ourselves with, no? For truth is what works, isn't it?

Not necessarily. With psychoanalysis, Freud articulated an entire system of thought that essentially comes down to a means for investigating the many ways in which human beings lie to themselves. Thus, in a sense, these lies "work" -- i.e., they have a function -- or they wouldn't have been erected in the first place.

For example, one routinely sees adults who were abused or neglected as children by their parents. This is the truth. But this truth doesn't "work" for an infant, because it would make living intolerably painful -- impossible, really. Therefore, in order to go on living, the child erects the lie, "my parents love me. There is something wrong with me." Interestingly, on some level, one must know the truth in order to erect the lie. Psychoanalytic therapy, in its broadest sense, is simply a search for truth, or what Bion called O.
"America's Intelligence Failures" is the topic that occupies ShrinkWrapped, the psychosphere's resident psychoanalyst; and at GM's Corner there is a marvelous post that discusses how one's perspective on reality is colored by one's worldview.

Assistant Village Idiot is busy discussing Tribes- from "Business" tribes to Military tribes, he covers them all. And, at our last stop, Dr. Helen is urging everyone to "Fight the Matriarchy":
Have you seen the new study that shows how "Queen Bee" women are actually holding back other women's careers?
Time to head back to base. If there are other psychbloggers out there who would like to be included next go-around, let me know. Meanwhile, you can't go wrong checking out these great blogs--they'll always have something interesting to say.

ELLISON'S CHALLENGE

Over at The Gates of Vienna, Dymphna has a post that challenges Congressman Keith Ellison,5th District, Minnesota--the first congressman to take his oath of office on the Quran. Dymphna writes in a letter to Ellison:
You have been elected to serve the Fifth District of Minnesota in the United States House of Representatives. This is a crucially important opportunity, not only for all of your district’s constituents, but also for Muslims in America — even Muslims worldwide, who watch American politics with close attention.

You are in an unprecedented position: the political point man for Islam in this country. As our only elected Muslim in national office, you have the heavy burden and the unique responsibility to aid the cause of Islam in its endeavor to become the religion of conciliation.

There is no doubt that you, as our sole Muslim member of Congress, could bring to bear a high level of influence on Iran and other Muslim countries, in order to make the situation for women in these countries more humane.

If you were to use your bully pulpit to speak out about the plight of women under sharia law — especially in Iran and Pakistan — you would be a powerful influence for good.

Go and read all of Dymphna's post and support the effort to nudge Ellison to help Muslim women under the yoke of oppression.

As an American congressman, Ellison is in a powerful position to do a great deal of good for the oppressed and abused women under Islam--like Nazanin, the young woman who I wrote about here.

You can write or call Ellison's office and encourage him to take up the cause of women like Nazanin and speak out on their behalf as a Muslim and as a U.S. Congressman. He has a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the values of America to the Islamic world. I sincerely hope he will take up the challenge.

THE PARANOID STYLE --RIGHT AND LEFT VARIATIONS

Here are two recent news articles for your consideration.

The first concerns Cindy Sheehan and her band of merry maniacs as they shouted down the Democrats at a news conference, chanting their latest cutesy slogan: ""De-escalate! Investigate! Troops home now!"

Sheehan, you might recall, is the person along with Harry Belafonte and Hugo Chavez who describes the President of the United States as "the world's greatest terrorist."

The second is this news story about a whacked-out group of fanatical religious protestors who believe the US is being punished by God for supporting homosexuality, so they wage violent protests at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. The leader of the group says that America is "feeling the sword of God" because it is pro-gay. A disapproving God "has become America's terrorist" and is sending soldiers home in body bags as proof.

The two articles demonstrate nicely how the extrreme platitudes, self-righteousness, and paranoid obsessions of the antiwar left dovetail nicely with those of the paleo-right. As Victor Davis Hanson once noted:
"Both see the Iraqi war through the same lenses: the American effort is bound to fail and is a deep reflection of American pathology."
[...]
Her antiwar venom could easily come right out of the mouth of a more calculating David Duke. Perhaps that's why he lauded her anti-Semitism: "Courageously she has gone to Texas near the ranch of President Bush and braved the elements and a hostile Jewish supremacist media."

This odd symbiosis began right after 9/11. Then the lunatic Left mused about the "pure chaos" of the falling "two huge buck teeth" twin towers, lamented that they were more full of Democrats than Republicans, and saw the strike as righteous payback from third-world victims.

The mirror-imaging fundamentalists and censors in turn saw the attack as an angry God's retribution either for an array of our mortal sins or America's tilting toward Israel.

In Iraq, the Left thinks we are unfairly destroying others; the ultra-Right that we are being destroyed ourselves. The former alleges that we are bullying in our global influence, the latter that we are collapsing from our decadence.

But both, in their exasperation at George Bush's insistence on seeing Iraq emerge from the Hussein nightmare years with some sort of constitutional government, have embraced the paranoid style of personal invective.

They employ half-truths and spin conspiracy theories to argue that the war was unjust, impossible to win, and hatched through the result of a brainwashing of a devious few neocons.

The unlikely coalition between the paranoid left and the paranoid right since 9/11 is held together by what Richard Hofstadter described in the 1950's as The Paranoid Style in American Politics.

At the time he wrote the essay, Hofstadter was primarily concerned with the conspiratorial fantasies of the right side of the political spectrum. Our present political climate however, offers much support for those who suspect that paranoid strain now also infects the left side with a virulent case of the same illness.

As to which side exhibits more pathology, you can decide for yourself. Both are severely toxic in their own right; but together, they represent a mix that is absolutely lethal.

Psychologically, it is very difficult to abandon paranoia and psychological projection once they are taken on by a particular group, since both--along with the delusions and distortions that they generate-- serve the purpose of accounting for an unacceptable status quo. Without a scapegoat who is considered to be racially, sexually, physically, or intellectually inferior, onto which your own fears can be projected; it would be horrifying and untenable to look inside one's own heart and soul for the source of the fear.

This is the nature of projection and paranoia. Those horrifying and unacceptable thoughts or feelings are denied ("not owned") by the person experiencing them, and instead are projected onto another individual or group. Thus, the person who originally had the offensive thought or feeling becomes the helpless victim of the evil "other" and they do not have to cope with the fact that the evil lies within themselves. This is the origin of almost all acts of racism, sexism, anti-semitism, etc. It is the source of most prejudice in the world; and certain prejudices that become socially acceptable--like the casual anti-semitism ubiquitous in the Middle East; or the causal anti-Republican, anti-conservative rhetoric adopted by the intellectual "elite" of this country.

Suffering from severe cases of envy and rage, both extremes of the political spectrum blame America (and Israel) for all the ills of the world. Both couch their own unacceptable feelings in "noble" or "godly" garments and claim they speak to a "higher truth." But the one truth they avoid is the reality of their own emotional chaos.

Both projection and paranoia are psychological traits which sense danger and exist with the human species in order to protect the ego. Their use is common in children and early in life; and is appropriately balanced in a mature adult by the development of the rational faculty--the intellect. As that capability develops during maturation, the ego mostly abandons paranoia and projection simply because they are both extremely maladaptive in the long run for any adult trying to cope with reality.

The tools of the politically paranoid--i.e., the paranoid style of the extreme right or left -- are denial, distortion, and projection. These psychological tools are almost always pathological when used to cope with the real world. For the user these three primitive psychological defenses permit a rearrangement of external reality (so that actual reality may be avoided); for the beholder, the users of these mechanisms frequently appear crazy or insane. These are known as the "psychotic" defenses, common in overt psychosis, in dreams, and throughout childhood.

These immature psychological manipulations work together to keep a person or a group insulated from reality. And it is reality that always has the ultimate say. Transiently avoiding reality may work for a time, but eventually, objective reality will defeat any attempt to pretend it doesn't exist.

One of the most common psychological defenses we have been witnessing over the last four years since 9/11 is psychological projection.

Projection is never a good long-term strategy--nor is it healthy--in an adult; and using such a defense mechanism represents a primitive attempt to shirk the responsibility for one's own feelings, thoughts, and actions. It causes and has caused much human misery, death, destruction and some of the most horrific acts that humans are capable of. When entire countries subscribe to a projected delusion (e.g., the "Jews" are to blame; the "Blacks" are the cause of all of our problems; "Republicans" are evil; homosexuals are evil--especially Republican homosexuals) it can lead to genocide and other behaviors that are paranoid and psychotically delusional. Full-blown paranoia occurs when one's mind severs the connection with reality entirely. Paranoia is a symptom of mental illness. Projection is only a symptom of severe mental dysfunction, as the psyche attempts to cope with a threatening world.

The motivations of the antiwar left are a conglomeration of desperate psychological strategies to deny the reality of Islamofascist terror; distort the struggle to eliminate it and to blame America for its very existence. It is safe to blame America, Israel and the West because (to paraphrase the wise words of Han Solo, speaking of Wookies) they don't cut off your head with a dull blade when they lose.

Let's be honest. Sheehan's people are not really "antiwar". They do not stage protests about the killing of innocent people by Al Qaeda's or Hamas or Hezbollah. They never demonstrated against the 100 million or more people murdered by communism in the last century--they cozy up to 21st century communists. They do not express their rage at the mass graves of Saddam, instead, they reserve that rage for Saddam's execution, which they can blame on the US.

As for the religiously "righteous" protestors at soldier's funeral or the anti-semitism of a David Duke; or any of those who feel their belief in God--or Allah for that matter-- justifies uncivilized and even barbaric behavior on their part. Let us be equally honest about this variation of the paranoid style: their behavior serves to camouflage the unacceptable feelings within that must be externalized to keep their own souls "holy" and "pure". You will notice that they also reserve their rage for America and its values and ideals.

And that summarizes the "root cause" underlying the behaviors of the two supposedly politically opposite groups. Both are rabidly, vehemently and unapologetically anti-American, and believe that America and its values are the source of all evil in the world.

But if they really wanted to understand the origins of human evil, all they need to do is look within; an extremely frightening proposition, requiring a degree of self-awareness, courage and honesty that is unlikely to be found in any who embrace the paranoid style.

SAVE NAZANIN

Nazanin Fatehi, who I have previously written about here, is an 18 year old Iranian girl sentenced to die for the crime of killing one of three men who were trying to rape her (see here, here and here). She was 17 years old at the time.

Nazanin's death sentence was overruled by Ayatollah Shahroudi last June after there was much international pressure applied to the Iranians; and she was given a re-trial. This trial started on August 30, but was then postponed to Jan 10, 2007.

Now, a documentary has been made about Nazanin and the fight to save her life. Please go to the site and watch the documentary and do what you can to create as much attention around this case as possible before the trial resumes this week. There is a petition there that you can sign; or you may make a donation to her trust fund, set up to help cover her legal fees and campaign costs.

In this new trial the Islamic Republic Court will either:
a) spare the life of Nazanin and release her from prison or
b) announce a prison sentence of x number of years or
c) re-condemn Nazanin for execution or
d) ask Nazanin to negotiate "Dieh" (Blood Money) with the family of the alleged rapist and have her released subject to her paying that amount.

This entire situation is evidence of how primitive, barbaric, and misogynistic the Iranian Islamic regime really is. Iran supposedly has signed international treaties which forbid them to execute any one under the age of 18; however they continue to do so under Islamic Sharia law.

Go watch the documentary and sign the petition. We were not able to save others from this kind of mullah injustice, but perhaps we can help save Nazanin.

CARNIVAL OF THE INSANITIES

Image hosted by Photobucket.com Time for the weekly insanity update, where the insane, the bizarre, the ridiculous, and the completely absurd are highlighted for all to see! This has been a week of rare idiocy (as always!). So, if you want to remain sane, the best thing is to poke some fun at the more egregious absurdities.

Send all entries for next week's carnival to Dr. Sanity by 8 pm ET on Saturday for Sunday's Carnival. Only one post entry weekly per blogger, please. And you might read this before submitting an entry.

Thanks for all the submissions. I try to use as many as possible! SO MANY INSANITIES! SO LITTLE TIME!!!

1. Threaten us and we'll nuke you. Oh yeah? The end of the world as we know it? Some people could care less about the rest of humanity.... (guess who that was said about?)

2. Rocky Balboa in real life?

3. “Never use a lit match or open flame to check fuel level” and other advice for dummies.

4. Drinking Kool-aid? Hey, just shut up and read! Ya think?

5. Yet another example of how we have all lost our minds.

6. Do you realize that "Annan" backwards is Nanna? Appropriate, considering his legacy. Mean-spirited? You decide.

7. Latest leftist ideological revision: Gays are a by-product of toxic capitalism. A pollutant. Somehow I don't think that will stop any useful idiots in their utopian pursuit of "social justice" and egalitarianism (maybe everyone will soon be a "pollutant"?)

8. In our insanely politically correct world, it is a relief to know that this is still acceptable. I'm not sure about 'pigs-in-a-blanket', though. Wait! Nevermind.

9. Damn those Zionists! And the oppression and aggression continue.... on a galactic scale! Could it all be due to the holy foreskin?

10. Oops! That was stupid from dumb people. But this is stupid from smart people.

11. Grab the remote! Little Mosque on the Prairie is about to begin!

12. What do Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Ann Coulter have in common? Now really. Is anyone surprised at this? Or, for that matter by this scientific study?

13. Queen Bees and Spiders on drugs.

14. An unknown enters the race for Senate--and for very sweet reasons!

15. A feral choir of homeless people? I swear I'm not kidding you.

16. On the fast track to an MBA.

17. An ungracious and undignified end to tyranny. But still, an end.

18. Remember Reagan? And then here's Gerald Ford....remembered by Chevy.

19. How do you keep those New Year's resolutions?

20. You always wanted to know how women pick mates, didn't you? Well, wonder no more. Of course, this has something to do with it, too, probably.

21. Books? Who needs books?

22. Quit yer bitchin'. It could have been worse!

GOING WIDE ?

Maybe we are planning to "go wide" after all..... See this:
WORD that Adm. William Fallon will move laterally from our Pacific Command to take charge of Central Command - responsible for the Middle East - while two ground wars rage in the region baffled the media.

Why put a swabbie in charge of grunt operations?

There's a one-word answer: Iran.

I have a one-word response: good.

PHONY CARING

Why is the federal minimum wage such a priority for the Democrats that it must be forced through in the first 100 hours? Siggy has the answer.
It is important to understand that no state is bound by federal minimum wage laws. Each state has the right to determine their own minimum wage laws, taking into account local economic conditions.
...
There is no federal legislation that forces employers to pay minimum wage- in fact, almost 90% of all hourly workers are paid above either state or federal minimum wage.

Why then, is federal minimum wage legislation such a priority for the democrats?

The answer is simple: Union support and union votes.

Many union collective bargaining wage agreements are based on the federal minimum wage. In many industries, union wages are calculated as multiples of the federal minimum wage.

Clearly it is perfectly ok for the Democrats to suck up to Big Unions. Especially if they think they can trick people into thinking they really really care about the 'little guy.'

They don't, of course.

Fausta has more thoughts on the subject.

CONVENTIONAL LEFTIST WISDOM FLUSHED

Just yesterday I was saying to a friend, that we haven't been hearing much about President Bush's poll numbers in the media. This meant, I concluded reasonably, that they must be up higher than the MSM would like.

Today we hear the astonishing news that our new Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has a 43% approval rating from the American people!

Isn't that wonderful! Isn't that amazing!

Blogs like the HuffPo couldn't wait to bash Fox News for daring to criticize this amazing woman; and even suggested that the did it because the sexist pigs were upset by her amazing popularity with the American people:

But launching this latest assault through TV captions is just, well, infantile. I guess Fox heard the latest and simply had to act.
Forty-three percent (43%) of Americans have a favorable opinion concerning the nation's new Speaker of the House. The first woman to serve in that role, Nancy Pelosi (D) earns favorable reviews from 45% of women and 41% of men. ...
Pelosi: 43% Have Favorable Opinion of New House Speaker

It's really incredible that the likes of Sean Hannity and Fox "News" can't take a moment out from their character assassinations to acknowledge that this was an historic week for women. This would include their own daughters, but I guess their political pettiness blinds these boys to the possibilities. Their Republican attacks continue unabated, complete with graphics.

It says a lot about the Republicans' support for women, especially those who reach the pinnacles of power. Republicans love to bring women out for show, but they do not give them the respect of their male counterparts. From Rice to Christy Todd Whitman, these women had titles, but no real voice.

[Ed Note: The sexist moron who wrote this obviously doesn't remember the incredibly vicious and racist attacks with which her friends on the left regularly attacked Condi Rice--a woman with more grace, talent and brains than the likes of Pelosi could ever dream of possessing--but I digress]

[Ed Note: Condi Rice had a title but no real voice? As one of the closest advisors to the POTUS in several key roles in his cabinet? What is the matter with these racist, sexist idiots of the left? --but I digress]

[Ed Note: And, they clearly were not listening when Fred Barnes said some very kind words about Pelosi just the other day before she was even sworn in--but I digress further]

What is not mentioned--nor will you ever see it as a headline in the NY Times -- as I suggested to my friend; is President Bush's approval rating from the same poll, which Don Surber kindly brings to our attention :
An e-mail from Mark Eichenlaub at the Regime of Terror:
If you listened to the MSM you’d swear that it was Pelosi. As false as most of their impressions are, you’d be wrong listening to them again.

Today’s approval numbers via Rasmussen are:

45% approval for Bush
43% approval for Pelosi

Another MSM conventional wisdom flushed down the toilet….

D’oh! Another guy not falling for our lies.

WHAT!! Can this possibly mean that The President of the United States--the BushHitler!--has polled higher than fancy Nancy?? Is this even remotely possible? How can this be?

To paraphrase the Huffpo hysteric, It says a lot about the Democrats' (and left's) support of this country, don't you think--especially those so blinded by ideological hate for anyone who thinks differently from them and has the temerity NOT to be of their political persuasion--that they reflexly do not give either the President or the women in his administration the credit they would to any lying, corrupt Democrat?

I certainly do.

UPDATE: Anyone who reads this blog knows my position on popularity polls (see here and here, for example). And, because I vehemently despise the way these meaningless and ridiculous daily polls are used and distorted by the media and everyone else (including myself), the reader should check out this post which draws a broader lesson from the poll analysis exercise. I shall retain my position that these kind of polls are almost completely worthless; certainly biased and meaningless; and should be taken with a grain of salt by anyone with a grain of sense. What concerns me most is the way polls are being used and abused in today's media; and are trotted out and enthusiastically highlighted when it suits someone's ideological purpose, and ignored when it doesn't.

GETTING NOWHERE FAST

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where –" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"– so long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

Clearly, the Cheshire Cat never met any of the current Democrats in Congress, who prove beyond a doubt that they have no intention of getting anywhere; and will be working hard to make sure we all go nowhere fast over the next two years.

Standing ovation by Dems for the lawmaker who hid illegal cash in his freezer. (i.e., not going anywhere on ethics reform. Is anyone surprised?)

Barney Frank accuses the Bush Adminstration of "ethnic cleansing" in...New Orleans. (i.e., not going anywhere with increasing civility or diminishing partisanship. Is anyone surprised?)

Biden: White House just postponing the loss of Iraq. (i.e. , don't bother trying to win in Iraq, we can't afford to have you be successful. Is anyone surprised?)

Dem letter to Bush: We strongly urge you not to do this or that but have absolutely no ideas about what you should do (i.e., our only suggestion is, of course, to surrender. Is anyone surprised?)

They are, of course, completely mad. And, while I don't know about you, I don't want to be around crazy people.

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

ARGGGGGGGG. It is going to be a long two years.

FOR THE CHILDREN, SO THEY NEVER HAVE TO GROW UP

Well, the Democrats are in power again and pushing their plans for a life-long non-learning program. Nancy Pelosi says that she's going to run Congress for "the children."

It came to me suddenly and forcefully yesterday, exactly what that phrase means to the Democrats as I was reading this story (hat tip: SC&A) :
Three years ago, when Ashley began to display early signs of puberty, her parents instructed doctors to remove her uterus, appendix and still-forming breasts, then treat her with high doses of estrogen to stunt her growth.

In other words, Ashley was sterilized and frozen in time, for ever to remain a child. She was only 6 years old.

Ashley, the daughter of two professionals in the Seattle area, never had much hope of a normal life.

You have to read the entire story to fully understand the implications of what these parents did and why. To further justify their actions, they started a blog with a long, detailed explanation of their decision to interrupt their daughter's maturation and turn her into an eternal child. While they vehemently claim that their actions were "loving" and for the purpose of "improving Ashley's quality of life", the only obvious people whose quality of life is improved is their own and their doctors, who apparently recommended the various procedures and then wrote a journal article about it.

I must say that I was appalled and dismayed on many, many levels at what was done to this child, and the self-serving rationale that was developed to justify it.

It occurs to me that what those parents did to Ashley is precisely what the political left, via the Democrats, want to do to the American public.

You see, they don't want us to grow up either. Mature adults think and act independently, and that is a severe risk to the ideology that propels the left. The last thing in the world they want is for their social programs to be successful because that would mean their ideology and beliefs have become superfluous.

Lucky for them that none of their programs actually work in the real world.

What is more important than any objective success in reality, however, is the carefully crafted rhetoric of concern and compassion. So we repeatedly hear how much they care about our welfare and our needs. How they champion the "little guy" and fight against oppression and injustice. They don't want us to get hurt in any way imaginable, physically or emotionally--even our fragile little feelings are to be taken care of, protected by the whole leftist notion of "political correctness."

And with every program they develop, they become more and more powerful and we become more and more dependent on them.

Think about how unrelenting the left's "cradle to grave" assault on critical and independent thinking has become. Since that infamous decade of 60's when my generation was invited to "tune in, turn off and drop out" we have been encouraged to "tune in" to the mindless messages and worthless programs of the left; "turn off" our brains; and drop out of reality.

Here's a short sampling:

For the discerning child, who is dedicated to sharing her toys; and bringing peace and social justice to the world-- your correct political orientation is outlined in this book.

For the adolescent in the public schools, the gentle indoctrination of childhood will be helpfully augmented by conscientious teachers who only want what is best for you. This gives you another chance to have your brain washed in the proper neurochemicals, approved by the Committee on Universal Peace and Brotherhood.

And as an adult in college and beyond, you can participate in United for Peace and Justice, ANSWER, and countless other groups leftover from the 60's, and obtain further experience in mindless obedience to the collective. In return, the omnipotent state will take care of you. You don't have to think, or work, or even try because all your problems are attributed to the capitalist, American oppressors. This is the stage where being designated a "victim" is passed off as social justice. Your choices are clearly presented: you can either be a member of one of the accepted victim classes (in which case you are assured the protection of the state); or you can join the collective leadership, working to ensure certain designated groups remain victims so that your own self-esteem can continue to grow by championing them. It is even better if you can do both, because then you have the victimhood seal of approval which makes your every pronouncement (whether racist, sexist, or homophobic) pure gospel.

By adulthood the brain has been sufficiently anesthesized so that the gaping insistencies and endless hypocrisy isn't at all bothersome and leads to no serious clinical effects, except for the childish expectation that everyone will think and feel as you do; endless whining and pouting if you don't get your way; and continual externalization of blame for your own personal failures, as well as your ideology's.

In the back of what's left of your mind, you know that all your problems in life are due to the fact that you have been oppressed and victimized by "the system", especially those darn Republicans, who hate the poor and try their damndest to steal opportunity away from you at every turn.

But those omnipotent Mommy and Daddy Democrats can always fix anything! The solution to every problem is More Laws, More Entitlements, More Social Programs, More spending, More, More, More. Kumbaya, my Lord, kumbaya.

And, since any tendency toward excessive narcissism has been carefully nurtured so as to facilitate both an exaggerated self-esteem (where you don't actually have to to achieve anything to deserve anyone's admiration) and a belief that difficult goals can be accomplished without any real effort on your part (accompanied by a finely-honed aura of oppressed victimhood, so that you have a ready-made excuse if you haven't achieved anything or made any effort in your life); while you will have successfully aged in years, you will effectively remain both psychologically and physically dependent and helpless without themommy and daddy state to take care of you.

Cox and Forkum get it exactly right.

Ashley's sociopathic and selfless parents have irreversibly and irrevocably ensured her dependence and eternal childhood. She never had a choice in the matter, and her chance of grow up and becoming the person she might have been is gone forever.

But for most of us, the path to eternal childhood and political tyranny, masquerading as as just another utopian "paradise" of the compassionate left--who only have your best interests at heart, is a matter of conscious, deliberate choice. You can grow and mature, learning to take responsibility for yourself and your own life; or you can willingly cede that responsibility to the "loving" parental collective, who has a very personal stake in keeping you forever dependent on them for the sake of their own power and comfort.

Ashley wasn't allowed to make that choice in her life, but you can.

GO WIDE, MR. PRESIDENT

This is the exactly the strategy I think President Bush should seriously consider putting forth next week for Iraq:
But there is another, far more effective option: go wide.

Going wide means recognizing that Iraq is just one front in a regional war against an Islamist Axis centered in Iran--and we cannot win that war without confronting the enemy directly, outside of Iraq.

Going wide means recognizing that the conflict in Iraq is fueled and magnified by the intervention of Iran and Syria. One of the reasons the Iraq Study Group report flopped was that its key recommendation--its one unique idea--was for America to negotiate with Iran and Syria in order to convince these countries to aid in the "stabilization" of Iraq. This proposal wasn't so much argued to death as it was laughed to death, because it is clear that Iran and Syria have done everything they can to de-stabilize Iraq, supporting both sides of the sectarian conflict there.

It is obvious that both regimes have a profound interest in an American failure and retreat in Iraq. After all, if America can successfully use force to replace a hostile dictatorship with a free society, then the Iranian and Syrian regimes are doomed. So as a matter of elementary self-preservation, they have done everything they can to plunge Iraq into chaos, supporting guerrillas and militias on all sides of the sectarian conflict....

Going wide also means recognizing that more is at stake in this war than just the fate of Iraq. This is a war to determine who and what will dominate the Middle East. Will this vital region be dominated by a nuclear-armed Iran, working to spread Islamic fascism? Or will America be able to exert its military influence and political ideals in the region?

This is a momentous question. But observe that the only major foreign-policy debate today is about what to do in Iraq.

The left focuses on Iraq for two reasons. First, they desperately want the US to lose the fight there so as to embarass and humiliate the person and country who they consider their real enemy; and the cause of all the ills in the world--George Bush and America. But second, they are incapable of understanding the big picture or thinking outside their ideological box.

Whenever they open their pretty little utopian music-box, the only sounds heard are denial and delusion playing in sweet antiwar harmony. "De-escalate, Investigate, troops home now!"

What is that mindless chant except the deep denial of people who are incapable of looking at reality? What is happening now in Iraq is a proxy war between Iran and Al Qaeda. If the compassionate and loving left wants to really witness the death of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, then the US should indeed pull out of that country. The ensuing slaughter won't be able to be blamed on America (though the left will try). It would be immoral for the US to withdraw from Iraq while the murderous predators on her border await an opportunity to act out their genocidal and totalitarian plans. The US is not the only entity interested in Iraq becoming a free and democratic country. Failure to recognize the sinister motives and behavior of Iran and Syria has been a major stumbling block in implementing our strategic interests there. If they are allowed to succeed in undoing the progress toward democracy in that region, then the greater war will also be lost.

In order to win on the Iraqi front in the war on terror, we must deal with reality. Imagine for a moment how things might have turned out if during WWII we had only focused on Japan and not on Germany or Italy? The latter two never attacked us directly--certainly not in our homeland; but if we had ignored them, it would have been at our peril, since all three of the axis powers were allied against us.

Until and unless we recognize this century's axis of evil (and North Korea will also have to be dealt with, but Kim Jong Il is a different kettle of fish than the religious fanatics of Islam) and take the necessary steps to aggressively counter them, we will never be able to embrace victory.

President Bush should indeed 'go wide'-- and (to coin a counter-chant), "escalate, obliterate and send the troops to win", both in Iraq and the larger war.

Forget "Go Big", "Go Long" or "Go Home." Go Wide, Mr. President.

UPDATE: Michael Ledeen has further thoughts.

THE SANITY SQUAD: DING DONG SADDAM IS DEAD

Happy New Year from The Sanity Squad, whose January 1st podcast is now posted at Pajamas Media!

Symbolic of endings and new beginnings, in this first podcast of 2007, the Squad takes up the topic of Saddam's execution in Iraq.

Reaction from around the globe has been mixed — the Left, Europe, and human rights groups are indignant and screaming; Saddam's dead-enders in Tikrit and elsewhere aren't happy either. But many others — including the members of The Sanity Squad — think justice has been served at last.

Join Neo-neocon , Shrinkwrapped, Siggy and myself as we discuss the execution; justice for mass murderers, and the importance of instilling appropriate fear into the hearts of similar tyrants and murderous despots everywhere. As usual, the political left and their knee-jerk outrage and continued sanction and support of these sorts of mass murderers do not get off lightly from the Squad's psychological analysis.

You might also want to check out Neo's excellent post that picks up on some of what we discussed, "Don't Cry For Saddam and His 'Show Trial'".

Previous podcasts of The Sanity Squad can be found here; and you can also download them from iTunes.

A VICIOUS MISOGYNY

In "The Boys of the Taliban", Jamie Glazov writes about one particular rule (rule 19) of the new Taliban "code of conduct" for its fighters in Afghanistan:
But there is a curious rule that the Western media has typically ignored. Rule No. 19 instructs that Taliban fighters must not take young boys without facial hair into their private quarters....

Aside from the question of what is permitted if a young boy does happen to have facial hair, this new Taliban commandment brings light to a taboo pathology that underlies the structures of militant Islam. And it is crucial to deconstruct the meaning of this rule -- and the horrid reality that it represents -- because it serves as a gateway to understanding the primary causes of Islamic rage and terror.

Rule No. 19 obviously indicates that the sexual abuse of young boys is a prevalent and institutionalized phenomenon among the Taliban and that, for one reason or another, its widespread practice has become a problem.

The fact that Taliban militants’ spare time involves sodomizing young boys should by no means be any kind of surprise or eyebrow raiser. That a mass pathology such as this occurs in a culture which demonizes the female and her sexuality -- and puts her out of mind and sight -- is only to be expected. To be sure, it is a simple given that the religious male fanatic who flies into a violent rage even at the thought of an exposed woman’s ankle will also be, in some other dysfunctional and dark secret compartment of his fractured life, the person who leads some poor helpless young boy into his private chambers.

The key issue here is that the demented sickness that underlies Rule No. 19 is by no means exclusive to the Taliban; it is a widespread phenomenon throughout Islamic-Arab culture and it lies, among other factors, at the root of that culture’s addiction to rage and its lust for violence, terror and suicide.

There is a basic and common sense empirical human reality: wherever humans construct and perpetuate an environment in which females and their sexuality are demonized and are pushed into invisibility, homosexual behaviour among men and the sexual abuse of young boys by older men always increases. Islamic-Arab culture serves as a perfect example of this paradigm, seeing that gender apartheid, fear of female sexuality and a vicious misogyny are the structures on which the whole society functions.
Glazov goes on to argue that Islamist terror can be thought of in part, at least, as a response to sexual rage, frustration, and the humiliation of being connected to a "degraded mother." Thus the men in the culture must constantly assert their masculinity, defend their masculine "honor", and strike out in rage against any who "shame" them.

This is apparent in the sexual mutilation of terror victims who are perceived as "inferior" by the Islamists, and on a par with women of their own culture. It is also seen in the Freudian symbolism of the barbaric act of beheading; as well as in the ubiquitous rape of non-muslim women around the world.

To some extent, such behavior has been seen in all cultures that debase or oppress women. In misogynistic cultures (and individuals) there is usually both the revulsion of the "whore" combined with a perverse obsession with, attraction to, and idealization of "perfection" in a woman (the "madonna" complex). In order to be idealized, women must be stripped of any hint of sexuality.
As a culture, the Arab-Islamic world has perfected this "stripping" to a nightmarish art form of shapeless, individualess, blank nothingness.

Misogyny can be defined as an unreasonable fear or hatred of women. Ever since Eve tempted Adam, women have been reviled in many ways and for many overt reasons around the world and in various cultures. They are hated and feared for their bodies, which tempt men to give into their "base" instincts; They are feared and considered "unclean" because of their monthly cycle of bleeding; they are hated for their unique feminine abilities, which are invariably considered malicious--or worse, evil--by the misogynist individual or culture.

There are three basic motivations underlying why men fear/hate/vilify women (and they are not mutually exclusive, but may exist in various combinations or all at the same time) :
-sexual frustration;
-castration anxiety, and
-resentment and anger at being dependent on women, especially the mother.

The idealization of women, on the other hand, originates from the innate desire of all humans, male or female, to return to the perfect union with the mother that each experienced in the womb.

There are also multiple reasons why women might hate other women on both an individual and societal level, and thus are often complicit in their own subjugation in misogynistic societies.

Many women hate or envy other women whose existence lowers their own status with men, i.e., other women who are more attractive than they are either in looks or accomplishment, depending on the cultural expectations. For example, in one culture a woman might attract men because of her beauty; in another because of her purity or religious devotion. A corollary to this is that the aging woman will increasingly become aware of her diminishing attraction to men or usefulness to a society that only values her reproductive capability. This sets up a dynamic tension between old and young women. In all cultures where female genital mutilation occurs, while it is the male-dominated society that mandates it, the operation itself is performed by older women on younger women; and has the direct effect of decreasing the sexual capabilities/responsiveness of the younger--thus "leveling the playing field" by some accounts. Older--"useless" women--can become societal heroes only by embracing the violence and rage of the sexually frutstrated and fearful men.

Needless to say, the family dynamics in viciously misogynic cultures like those dominated by Islamic extremists, create severely impaired girls and boys. It has been noted by many researchers and observers that children of both sexes are routinely physically and sexually abused by male relatives (indeed there are religious rules that designate under what circumstances babies may be used for sexual gratification by adults) . The boys are publicly circumcised and the girls clitoridectomized. Women's behavior becomes the source of all shame and dishonor, and they must be ruthlessly controlled. The degree of control is proportional to the degree of sexual repression and frustration (and hence rage) that is mandated by the culture/religion.

In normal societies, the act of "mothering", which is almost always relegated to the female, may be accomplished by either females or males as long as they provide that early and continual nurturing, acceptance and security that a baby needs. The role of "fathering" can also be taken on either by females or males, particularly to the offspring of the same sex and that role usually begins at about the toddler (age 4 give or take). To raise a healthy child, healthy males and females are essential. But the cultural debasement and humiliation of women has a profound impact on the children.

Male children in societies that demonize or debase women must overemphasize their "maleness" in order to separate from the mother. As grown men, far from being able to mitigate the aggressive impulses of a child, such men will encourage these impulses in order to "prove" to the world at large that they (and later, their sons)have not been "feminized". Cultures where women have extremely low status almost always encourage the development of inadequate, "macho" men, who need to prove their manliness and constantly.

In "Where Have All The Mothers Gone?" I commented about a study which demonstrated the power of "good" mothers --i.e., normal, healthy, functioning and unoppressed by their culture-- in overcoming aggression or "bad" behavior in children. Researchers discovered that "good" mothering was able to prevent aggressive and self-destructive behavior in at-risk monkeys. In human terms, "Good" mothering provides a child with respect, love, and security-- the basic aspects of "nurture" that are essential for normal development.

The findings of this and other landmark research clearly suggest that without an early mothering influence children were much more likely to grow up to be aggressive and antisocial.

From a psychological perspective then, the freedom and empowerment of women in society are absolutely critical because they are responsible for the earliest environmental influences on children--influences that will impact the child throughout his or her life. If the society has little respect for women and regularly demonizes, debases or humiliates them, it will have a profound generational impact. This is why encouraging women's rights around the world should be a high priority in US Foreign Policy.

Women subjected to institutionalized, societal abuse (such as what we saw under the Taliban; and what we see to a greater or lesser extent in almost all Islamic countries--where physical abuse is sanctioned; where women are sexually demonized; where they are deprived of education, as well as physical, social, economic and political freedom) are hardly in a psychological position to be able to provide effective "nurturing" to children.

Women whose own aggressive impulses have been savagely constrained by society and who have few options to sublimate those impulses, are at grave risk of encouraging aggressive and violent "acting out" on the part of their children on their behalf-- especially the male child who must be seriously conflicted about his love for and identification with a lowly-regarded woman.

In other words, such women will hardly prevent inappropriate aggression in their offspring, when such aggression vicariously meets their own needs. And the male children will have to assert their separation and distance from the debased female that is their mother, as aggressively and violently as possible. The father, who might undo some of this early pathology is himself also in the grip of the dysfunctional societal demands, and he must constantly deal with subverting his own normal sexual drives which can only find expression through sanctioned deviancy (as exemplified in Rule 19) and aggression toward women who dare to challenge the societal taboos(i.e., unveiled women, "uppity women", or any infidel women).
Is it any wonder sexual impulses become so perverted and directed toward children? Or that child sexual abuse becomes the only societal outlet for sexuality? Or that the residual aggression is expressed in a barbaric, uncivilized manner?

Family dynamics obviously play an extremely important role in the development of personality, especially in providing values and role-models. The dysfunctional family of Middle Eastern Muslims, where women are hidden and oppressed; prevented from ever being able to grow up normally, while the sexually repressed and enraged men must avoid the shame of the feminine and must aggressively defend his honor and manhood by controlling and debasing anyone who threatens it.

Under the Taliban, which arguably is the most malignant iteration of Islam's dysfunction, women were actively oppressed and beaten for any attempt to express themselves. Even today, there are actual "debates" about this.

Sexuality is an essential part of each of us. The double standards of modesty and behavior encouraged by the current practice of Islam is destructive to the normal development of personality in both males and females. Psychopathic traits in males are societally encouraged, while females are conditioned to be their willing victims. (When women seek to "equal" men by blowing themselves up, you know there is some sort of psychopathy at work--as opposed to "gender liberation"). Also, how will a child grow up normally knowing their mother thinks of them in this way?

A culture that is viciously misogynistic creates both men and women who are severely dysfunctional in almost every sphere of human activity.

THEY MEAN WELL...

If you want a perfect example of what I was talking about in my post the other day on the redistribution of poverty, then I can't do much better than this article by John Stossel , "Is This Anyway To Help The Homeless?" this morning at RCP:
The health department said it was just looking out for the homeless. But did the officials ever think about where street people eat when they don't eat at these churches?

"They've never stopped me from eating out of a dumpster or a trash can," says James, an astute homeless man who understands Henry Hazlitt's "economics in one lesson," namely, look for the secondary results of government policy. The government can close down the church kitchens, but that'll only send the poor to the garbage cans. Is that better?

"Some of them take their jobs just a little too seriously," said James. "They got nothing better to do than sit around and write legislation."

James has put his finger on another important point: the perverse incentives facing bureaucrats, who get no credit if they never meddle in our peaceful activities.

An old, near-toothless man agreed with James. "I thought they was crazy. I mean, they're [the church people] helping people, and they're trying to stop it."

By "perverse incentives" read: government officials get to feel good (and self-righteous) about doing something "to help the homeless", when in reality their actions only hurt them.

But, they mean well....Expect to see a lot of this in the next 2 years, especially with a Democratically-controlled congress looking out for your welfare.

FAILURE IS THE ONLY OPTION AND THEIR ONLY HOPE

On the contrary, people who believe that truth is measured by polls; and that the more people who believe the way you do automatically means you are "reality-based"; that the intensity of your feelings about reality are all that matter; and that failure is the only option, have no idea how long-term battles are waged--and won.

That kind of moral maneuvering is brought to you daily by the mindless minions of the left.

REDISTRIBUTING POVERTY

Thomas Sowell wrote in a recent column:
People in the media, in academia and among the intelligentsia in general who are obsessed with "disparities" in income and wealth usually show not the slightest interest in how that income and wealth were produced in the first place.

They are hot to redistribute the existing income and wealth but seem wholly unaware that how you do that today can affect how much income and wealth will be produced tomorrow. Any number of schemes for redistributing wealth have ended up redistributing poverty in a number of countries.

"Progressives" in the media and among academics and intellectuals claim to be interested in ending poverty but the production of more output is the only way to end poverty for millions of people.

It not only can be done, it has already been done in many countries, for all countries were once very poor by today's standards. But most self-styled "progressives" show virtually zero interest in economic history or in economics in general.
Read the entire essay. Sowell is absolutely correct. As I have said multiple times, poverty has a cure. But for the left--those "progressives" that Sowell identifies, to embrace that cure would require letting go their death-grip on an ideology whose economic redistribution plans have repeatedly been shown to be catastrophically ineffective and oppressive in the real world.

Indeed, their "progressive" ideology has, in fact, caused all the societies which believed in it to regress economically and politically; causing misery and death for many millions of souls.

If trillion of dollars in investment and aid hasn't been able to raise economic output in such countries, then what can? It turns out that democratic institutions and economic freedom have been shown to be the key determinants of growth and have "a positive influence on economic growth, while foreign aid does not."

In other words the alleviation of poverty is directly linked to economic freedom. The more liberty; the more people are free to pursue their own happiness, the less poverty.

Additionally, economic liberty and democracy together is far more effective than democracy alone in restraining nations from going to war.

The freest economies have a per-capita income of $29,219, more than twice that of the "mostly free" at $12,839, and more than four times that of the "mostly unfree."

It is economic freedom that is the true cure for poverty. Not taxes. Not regulation. Not government control of the economy and redistribution of wealth; but capitalism. And, it is important to note that economic freedom is unachievable without political freedom. That is the link between poverty and governance. It is not enough to have a superficial form of democracy like the Palestinians, Iranians or the Venezuelans. The proof of a free country is more than just getting to vote for various thugs and criminals once in a while. It is in being able to pursue your own, individual goals and happiness freely without interference or contrary demands from the state.

Programs that originate with the "best of intentions" end up doing exactly the opposite of what was intended. Yet, many people are so ideologically committed to one way of thinking that they not only refuse to change, but keep pouring money into programs that can be shown to actively harm the people they are meant to help--encouraging dependence rather than autonomy; a sense of entitlement, rather than a sense of personal accomplishment; and reinforcing stereotypes they were meant to end.

What makes matters worse is that the "champions of the poor and oppressed" (as progressives of the left like to think of themselves) then virtually demonize anyone who suggests an alternate strategy-- even when that strategy has been proven to work.

We see this time and again in their portrayal of Republicans as people who "hate the poor" or as racists, whenever they suggest that pouring money into some programs has not worked or even diminished the problem of poverty. The radical idea that maybe there may be other solutions that encourage independence and self-sufficiency are reflexly deemed as insulting, demeaning, or damaging to the self-esteem and feelingz of the poor.

Such programs are basically all show and no substance. They make the people who propose and maintain them feel good, but do little to change the underlying causes of poverty and, in fact, reinforce the dynamics that perpetuate it.

The true believers of the political left become hysterical and incapable of reasonable discussion at this point; and psychologically it is apparent that their beliefs on this subject serves an intense psychological need. They need to portray their enemies as racist, sexist etc. because their demonstrable behavior often belies their own glorious rhetoric.

Thus, it is often the case that the "champions of gays" will gleefully and deliberately "out" gay Republican who prefer anonymity; or call sucessful black people "uncle toms" because they are Republicans and not Democrats. Basically, anyone who sucessfully escapes the pit of poverty and the left's propaganda and begins to think for themselves outside the leftist/progressive box automatically become gender or race "traitors".

This is a very convenient psychological ploy that prevents these progressives from ever having to acknowledge their own innermost prejudices and biases, and hence they can easily convince themselves that their own racist, sexist behavior is appropriate--or even serves some "higher good". In the psychiatry business, we refer to this psychological maneuver as "projection". It requires considerable self-deception and this is usually achieved by "talking the talk" of equality, but "walking the walk" of egalitarianism.

In no time, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" has morphed into "from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs".

"From each according to their ability blah blah blah.." has NEVER worked anywhere it has been tried. The only result has been dragging everyone down to the level of poverty and misery and keeping them there. There are many people --both Democrats and Republicans-- who genuinely want to end racism and poverty. Many sincerely want to help the poor to have better lives. So, the question is: why not go with what works, instead of what doesn't and has never worked?

As I have said repeatedly on this blog, poverty has a cure--but it is not in the psychologically devastating social programs that promote victimhood and encourage a politically correct version of racism. It is not even more "compassionate" and condescending social programs that artificially encourage "self-esteem" or promote "Black history" or "Gay pride" or "Women's studies"; or an endless array of affirmative action programs. Nor is the solution to continue to pour $$trillions into some sort of quagmirish"war on poverty".

The cure is economic opportunity. The solution is capitalism.

In a post titled "Capitalism is Good For the Soul" I said:
One cannot escape noticing that the intellectual trend in the West is to continually bash capitalism, business, and free trade; while simultaneously enjoying the benefits of them.

Our academics rail against business. Our government constantly seeks to control it. Our youth are propagandized to death about its evils. Popular culture refrains from painting Islamofascists as the villians in movies out of political correctness, but does not hesitate to make big businessmen evil and grandiose.

One harmful result of this sorry situation is that there are few people--even among those who stalwartly defend the free market, who understand and appreciate the essential morality of capitalism.

The foundation of capitalism is human freedom in its most classical, liberal tradition.

Contrary to the many articles and books written about it through history by economists and scholars, capitalism's incredible production of wealth is only a side-effect that occurs when political freedom is present. It has been argued, and I agree, that both captialism and freedom themselves are prerequisites for moral behavior.

The moral case for capitalism is not taught at our universities, nor is it argued much in our culture. In fact it has been more or less universally accepted that systems such as communism and socialism are morally superior to capitalism--even though in practice such systems have led to the death and enslavement of millions, and to those unlucky enough not to die from them, they have led to the most horrible shrinking and wasting of the human soul.

All other economic systems besides capitalism routinely mouth moral platitudes about ending poverty; bringing justice etc. etc. But, the only economic system that delivers is the one constantly accused of causing poverty and injustice--capitalism.

Redistributing wealth--the method of choice promulgated by the political left--is a scam that so-called "progressive" con artists have played for many decades now. What they actually do is redistribute poverty because their goal of the scam, as Sowell brilliantly notes, is to give themselves "sweeping powers to control other people's lives, in the name of curing the ills of society."

Scratch a progressive leftist, and you will see that underneath the caring, compassionate exterior he or she presents to the world, is the con artist/tyrant whose primary desire is control over others.

THIS SAYS IT ALL

From The Corner and Victor Davis Hanson yesterday:

Saddam's death throes [Victor Davis Hanson]

One of the most depressing sights of the entire Saddam postmortem were the clips shown ad nauseam of all the dignitaries, diplomats, and obsequious reporters who in years past trekked to Baghdad to flatter or to pay homage to this creepy mass murderer. Watching a younger Kofi Annan, Lindberg like, pump Saddam's hand, smiling and offering blandishments was sickening. Surely the world can learn from this sordid spectacle, and not repeat the same mistake with Ahmadinejad and Assad. Their demise will come soon enough, and only the clips and outtakes of the appeasers will remain.

It is getting so that the cheap anti-American rhetoric from Europe and the Middle East about our purported complicity in killing a mass murderer should be worn as a badge of honor. We caught him, turned him over for a transparent trial, and ensured he would never murder again. So the question remains: where is the true morality-building this killer's bunkers, selling him weapons, taking his oil-or putting him in a noose?

Nothing was more evident of the moral impoverishment of the Palestinians than their collective lamentation over the fate of this mass killer of the Kurds and Arabs. We gave the Palestinian Authority hundreds of millions of dollars for housing, schools, and security and they hate us; Saddam gave them a few thousand dollars as bounty for suicide murderers and they loved him.

That says it all.
