This won't stop physical effects such as volcanic eruptions or the immediate consequences of another's violent behaviour but it does afford a means of societal change, as famously declared by Margaret Mead. Principles such as turning the other cheek or loving thy neighbour that confronted the social reality of the day have launched moral revolutions, overturned slavery (in most countries)and allowed major European nations to emerge from centuries of warfare to cooperation and a commitment to peacefully overcome cultural differences and economic hardships that did, a century ago lead to world wars.
Principles such as minimising pollution also confront the economic "realities" of the day but slowly gain acceptance through growing awareness of deeper realities. With the morality of hope we can deal falteringly and laboriously with the uncomfortable complexities of man's interaction with nature.

While no act of will will affect physical realities such as tomorrows sunrise, social reality is what we choose collectively to make it.Murray Scottnoreply@blogger.com
