It seems to me that our Founding Fathers got lucky because they didn't want to overturn the entire applecart and replace everything with a grand new Utopian System; all they wished for was to abolish a corrupt Executive (the Monarch) who sat an ocean away. They preserved the colonies and the structure of 13 separate governments with the Articles Of Confederation. Only later, under duress, did they agree to move to a new system of government under the Constitution. Still they enshrined States' rights and the rights of the People of States, quite strongly. Though as can be seen in the state of our politics today, not strongly enough.

They were fearful of tyranny and yet knew a strong national government was necessary, and they were wise enough to impose checks and balances and constraints. That is probably the best that can be done; it takes an American People willing to throw away their freedom, to allow Obama's Executive Branch to institute the thoroughly un-American idea of his Czars to Rule Us.

The EU is currently facing the kind of turmoil that prompted our Founding Fathers to institute the Constitutional Convention, and prompted those attending to radically depart from their stated mission, and forge a new Constitution. We were, indeed, incredibly lucky.

The time for those in power in the EU to institute such a gathering is passing, if in fact it did not pass already a year or even two years ago. They have missed their chance to do something similarly wise, to reinvent themselves in the nick of time. Their time has run out. They are not as fortunate with their current leaders as we were fortunate with ours in the 1780's.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
